The Topeka Golden Giants played as a Western League team in Topeka during the 1887 season. They won the pennant that year by taking 23 of their final 24 games to finish at 83-24, 15 1/2 games ahead of the Lincoln Tree Planters. Their .775 winning percentage is likely one of the best in minor league history. Walt Goldsby managed the club, which scored 1,354 runs, over 12 per game.
The Golden Giants were a high-priced collection of major leaguer players, including Bug Holliday, Jim Conway, Ecky Stearns, Perry Werden and Jimmy Macullar. On April 10, 1887, the Golden Giants also won an exhibition game from the defending World Series champions, the St. Louis Browns (the present-day Cardinals), by a score of 12-9.
Surprisingly, they did not return the next year.
