White sneaks past Blue 6-5
Battle of the Giants goes to John Tetuan's sqaud.

National Collegiate Summer Classic In the first game of the inaugural Summer Classic, the Topeka Golden Giants’ White Team defeated the Blue Team 6-5 in a seven inning game. The White Team started Cody Faulkner on the mound while the Blue Team sent Kevin Sweeney in as its starting pitcher.

Playing the role of home team, the Golden Giants’ Blue squad jumped out to an early lead. In the bottom of the first, Nigel Williamson hit a leadoff single and stole second. The next batter, Blake Stroth, hit a hard shot to left centerfield that bounced over the outfield wall for a ground-rule double and sent Williamson home to score the game’s first run.

In the fourth inning, the White Team tied up the game. Josh Cyr was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a single from David Longmoore and scored on a single by Ross Kivett. Kivett’s RBI knotted up the score at 1-1.

That score was not to last long as the Blue team pulled away in the bottom of the fifth. Nick Parent smacked a two bagger to lead off the inning. When Tobi Cowdin and Williamson drew walks, the Blue squad had the bases loaded with one out. Stroth broke the tie with his second RBI of the game, a single to score Parent. At this point, Jake Moore replaced Faulkner on the mound, but two more runs would come in before the book was closed on the White team’s starter. Cowdin sprinted home on a passed ball and Dillon Hazlett hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield that sent Williamson home. That three run outburst gave the Blue team a 4-1 lead.

It seemed as though the Blue team had all of the momentum, but Josh Cyr changed that with just one swing. With Aaron Rea standing on first base, Cyr crushed a deep shot that cleared the wall in left centerfield. His two run RBI homer narrowed the Blue team’s lead to 4-3.

In the sixth, Robert Hawkins replaced Moore as the White team’s pitcher. His squad once again fell behind by multiple runs. Adam Davey drew a walk and stole second to give the Blue team a runner in scoring position. Cowdin smashed a hard line drive single between short and second and Davey ran home to extend the Blue team’s lead to 5-3.

In the top of the seventh, Cowdin relieved Sweeney with the Blue Squad up 5-3. The White squad mounted a last gasp comeback. Dale Ricketts was hit by a pitch and Blaine Matthews hit a single. When Quinn Boyer hit a single, Ricketts came home, but an error allowed Matthews to also score, and Boyer to reach second. That left the score once again tied, this time at five runs apiece. Aaron Rea snapped the tie with an RBI single that drove Boyer home.

No more runs would cross the plate for the White team but the one run lead was enough for the win as Andy Urban came in to hurl the seventh and quickly earned the save. Both teams play two games tomorrow as do the Pueblo Collegians and Peekskill Tides. The first game on Wednesday’s slate starts at 11:00 in the morning and the last one gets underway at 8:00 pm.
